The United Nations Day (UN Day) is a commemoration day that celebrates the official foundation of the United Nations, established in October 24, 1945. It also has the role of honoring the countries that collaborate to maintain world peace. At Manila Xiamen International School, UN Day is celebrated annually through a wide range of activities that allow students to explore and appreciate diverse cultures and traditions of countries worldwide and to learn beyond lessons taught in the classrooms.
From October 27 to 28, middle and upper school students organized booths for food sales and poster making of their representing countries. Then, working in classes, students researched the various cultures of the country they represented such as learning the recipes of traditional foods. In this process, students not only learned about different cultures but were also able to foster leadership skills and international mindedness.
The UN Day Parade and performances were held on the second day after the food sale, beginning with showcasing various traditional costumes and dances of each nation represented. Dressing in clothes from different ethnic groups and performing their cultural dances, students reflected on the similarities, differences and uniqueness of people across the world.
Through this United Nations Day celebration, the MXIS community had a means of having on a trip around the world. It has opened their eyes to diverse cultures, equity, inclusion, and given them a sense of having a place in this world through the lenses of the past, present, and even future, becoming a global citizen.
