A field trip is an annual activity of the Manila Xiamen International School that provides enjoyable opportunities for students to explore knowledge, ideas, and cultures beyond the classroom. After being temporarily paused due to the COVID pandemic in the past few years, field trips are back again at MXIS. From April 26–27, students from grades 4–11 embarked on a journey of interdisciplinary learning to Dehua and Quan Zhou.

On the first day, students arrived at the World Heritage Site and World Ceramic Capital, Dehua, to discover the ceramic culture under the warm welcome of locals. Walking through the Exhibition Hall of the Dehua Kiln of the Song and Yuan Dynasties and Qudou Palace, students learned and explored the historical and cultural connotations behind the productions and trades of ceramics. Next, in Shunmei Ceramic Culture World, students observed the process of ceramic production. Furthermore, students experienced this impressive artistry by making and designing their ceramics, ending the Dehua trip with their hand-made potteries.

The following day at Quan Zhou All Love Park was filled with merriment, enjoying entertainment facilities at the amusement park, including animal performances, and at the same time observing maritime creatures. Students were able to possess the IB learner profile of caring by perceiving living organisms in nature, reflecting upon current environmental concerns, interactions between humans and organisms, and the impacts of these activities. While having fun, students developed awareness and compassion towards nature and the current global issues associated with human activities.

Under laughter and joy, the field trip marks the end of spring. While this field trip provides a learning experience outside the school, it is also an opportunity of leisure for students to relief academic stress. With the summer breeze will come the final exams for the semester as well as several school activities. Good luck to all Egrets for the upcoming challenges and the rest of the school year!
