“The connection of hobbies and extracurricular activities towards a well-rounded person”
Hi my name is Julie Chen, I’m a grade student studying in Manila Xiamen International School. I’ve been studying in this school for awhile now, and I’ve also attended several extracurricular activities such as MUNOX and egret carrier, these activities really enhanced my skills and made a more well rounded person. Moreover, they taught me a lot about things I couldn’t have learnt in a classroom setting, for instance critical thinking, leadership, and etc.
1. What are the hobbies and interests that you think is valuable towards your skills?
My hobbies are music, drawing, and collaborative activities. For music I like to play piano, I’ve been working on piano for about 3 years, and also one thing I really like about is that our school has provided this opportunity for students to show case their skills in many kinds of discipline, for instance I got to showcase my skills in piano when we are having a band activity. I also like to draw because it is a way to express my feelings in a more abstract way and also use it to express stories such as mangas and comics. Lastly, collaborative activities that definitely has to attributed to my time spent in activities like the Model United Nations. During this event I have to cooperate and collaborate with people, not only from our school and different grade level, but also people from all across the world. So there I can wider my horizon by communicating to them and also learn a lot of valuable experiences about how I can better cooperate with people, especially with those who has a difference in age and ideology.
2. How do extracurricular activities influence you academically?
The first initial reason I chose to attend clubs like egret carrier and events such as Model United Nations is to enhance my academic skills. It make me a better researchers, in MUNOX students are required to research about their assigned countries and also the issues they are dealing with. It also made me a better critical thinker and also a more open minded person, which will definitely contribute in my future academic.
3. How do your overcome difficulties?
The first thing I will do when I face a difficulty is to reflex one what I have done. For instance, the MUNOX last year which is being held by our school, I was an assistant director, during that time, I’ve met a lot of people whom impressed me a lot because due to the different in culture and ideologies. It was a difficult time for me because it requires time to get use to collaborating with others, especially people like this, when I face these situations I will reflex on how I behave and what is the root of this problem, and when I get the problem clear, I will get to know the fundamentals or causes of such problem. Therefore, I could view and judge this problem in a wider perspective and a more objective way. Further more, I will try to communicate my feelings with seniors and asks for they’re advices.
4. How do you ensure the balance between your academic and extracurricular activities?
Since I am still in middle school so my pressures given aren’t as severe as high school, so I am not experiencing any huge problem when balancing. However, there are still times where I’m having a hard time maintaining a well balance between these two, so what I do is to either apply my academic skills on my extracurricular activities or try to combine them, therefore, these gives me a feeling of I am doing my academic activity at the same time with this project assigned by our school, and this is also something I would want to do as an extracurricular activity.
5. What are your career goals and future plans?
For now, I would want to pursue psychology and perhaps a teacher or a therapist because since young I always love to communicate my ideas with others and of course I would like to get them challenged by sharing them to other people who have different opinions other than my own. By becoming a teacher, I believe I’ll get the opportunity to share my experiences and knowledges to my students and at the same time learning from them as well.
