Dates: April 1 – 2, 2023

On March 31st, with presentations in progress and competitive and mental preparations, the senior team, comprised of 11th grade students Alex Wong, Roman Go, Ethan Chen, Joy Lee, Annie Wang, Juliet Lee, and 10th grade student Yuki Tsao, departed from Xiamen for Guangzhou to attend the ASDAN Business Simulation regionals. This was another tick in the box, adding to the number of business simulation competitions that MXIS students have joined. Bearing in mind the past success and achievements the previous rounds have brought and the competitive experience, the team was determined to bring home another batch of awards to the school’s name.

The competition that began on April 1 was held in the Guangzhou Polytechnic Experimental School. There were 7 total schools that attended, represented by the students present at the event, and 14 teams, or “companies,” with each team comprising 6–8 members. At their theater auditorium, the competition started with an opening ceremony by ASDAN staff on business information, the timeline of events, the rules and regulations of the events to come, and award introductions. The following events of the day comprised the auction game, where companies would use their communication skills, interact with each other, and buy and sell materials needed to construct a product in their business, which is simulated in an online mass-connected network game created by ASDAN. The senior students communicated with other companies amidst a sea of bustling students shouting price offers and calling for other teams in need of materials. Ultimately, the senior team was able to complete the challenging game by collecting enough products to produce one single product. Although it was not an exemplary result, it was a satisfying and relieving win for the team.

Lastly, the final events of the day were the initial operation rounds, where, using another online platform provided by ASDAN, companies used their mathematical calculative abilities and business understanding to compute and input decisions that simulate financial gain or loss. The team used their past knowledge and experiences from previous rounds and thorough practice to try their hardest to make financial gains. The next and final day of the competition resumed the final operation rounds. Essentially, the operation rounds were a bargain, and the results were unpredictable, so they could only hope for the best and be awarded by the end of the ceremony.

Finally, during the last few hours of the ASDAN Business Simulation regionals, there was the Awesome or Awkward show, which is in essence a talent show where members Roman Go and Joy Lee, with the encouragement of fellow team members and ASDAN staff, performed a short-notice duet performance. The closing ceremony began with the awarding of the different certificates, medals, and trophies to the teams that achieved the highest distinctions. Overall, the MXIS team won the auction game certificate and both the pitch deck and business battle award for ranking the highest among all other companies. Although the team did not place at the top spot of this round, they were qualified to go to the World Youth Economic Forum, the final round of the ASDAN Business Simulation.

The MXIS students returned home with a sense of satisfaction from what they did achieve and brought home what mattered most: the memories they made and the experiences they could share with their fellow schoolmates.
